Free CDL programs

“Free” CDL training from a carrier usually means the company pays for training if you agree to drive for them. If you leave early, the contract may require you to repay the training. The full comparison, including third-party estimates of those repayment amounts, is in Is free CDL training really free?

The national median published tuition is $4,700 across 2,218 programs that list a price. 486 of those programs list under $3,000. That is the number to put next to a repayment clause.

The FMCSA file dated 2026-10-31 has 32,966 training locations. 26,833 (81%) are private enrollment only. Most of those are companies training their own hires, which is why they are counted on our state pages and not sold as a public price list. You cannot comparison-shop a private yard the way you can a school that publishes tuition.

Other ways the tuition gets paid

  • WIOA, if your workforce board approves a program on the eligible-training list.
  • Tuition reimbursement after you are hired, which still means you pay first.
  • VA education benefits, which we cannot flag from these files. See GI Bill.
